It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
