It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
