It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
