It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
