It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
