basic job application template
It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
