It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
