It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
