It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
