It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
