It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
