It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
