It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
