It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
