It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
