It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
