It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
