It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
