It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
