It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
