It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
