It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
