It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
