It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
