It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
