It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
