blank calendar template 2019
It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
