It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
