It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
