It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
