It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
