It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
