It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
