blank monthly calendar template 2019
It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
