It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
