It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
