It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
