It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
