It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
