blank weekly calendar template
It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
