It may look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
