It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
