It may look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
