It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
