It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
