It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
