book report outline template
It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
