It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
