It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
