It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
